WARUNG HIK SOLO

Warung HIK Solo or angkringan has long been a part of Solo City's identity, shaping the social life of its people, who enjoy nglaras (relaxing) and jagongan (chatting). Since electricity was introduced in Solo in 1902, nightlife has flourished with the emergence of entertainment such as outdoor cinemas and movie theaters, attracting many newcomers in a wave of urbanization. Keraton Kasunanan and Mangkunegaran facilitated traditional urbanization through the Abdi Dalem apprenticeship system, while the colonial government and the trade sector promoted urbanization in bureaucracy and the informal economy. The opportunity to earn a living at night was seized by the wong cilik (common people), particularly those from the outskirts of Surakarta, such as Klaten, who sold light meals. Initially carried on shoulder poles, their goods later transitioned to carts, establishing themselves in strategic locations like Taman Sriwedari and Pasar Pon, which at the time were bustling nightlife centers.
